Log Cabin Kits · Western North Carolina
Pro Property Design Build builds log cabin kits and custom log, timber frame, hybrid and craftsman homes across Western North Carolina in partnership with Bear’s Den Log Homes, a North Carolina dealer for Honest Abe Log Homes. Your kit is milled from kiln dried timber to your plan, and one licensed local team builds it, with a single point of contact from the first site visit to the final key.

The Partnership
Bear’s Den Log Homes is a North Carolina log and custom home dealer, recognized more than once as Dealer of the Year by Honest Abe Log Homes, a family owned manufacturer that designs, mills and ships its log and timber frame packages from its own plant. Bear’s Den also works with Southern Timbercraft, whose interlocking structural insulated panels create a wall system that is significantly more energy efficient. Pro Property Design Build is the licensed general contractor that turns that kit into a finished home on your land.
Bear’s Den helps you choose a style, a floor plan and materials, then customizes the design. A complete cabin kit is generated from your finished drawings.
We prepare the site and build the foundation, which the kit does not include, then raise the home and complete every system and finish under our North Carolina general contractor license.
Every question, quote and schedule update comes through our team, from the first call to move in day.

Styles We Build
Homes of every size, from small cabins to traditional homes to spacious estates, designed around your land, your budget and the way you live.
Solid log walls milled from Eastern White Pine, with a choice of log profiles. You can even use one profile on the exterior walls and another inside for exactly the look you want.
Timber frames are joined with tight fitting wooden pegs, while post and beam homes use notched joinery. Both leave the heavy timbers exposed inside and favor open plans with fewer walls and halls, so the home lives larger than its footprint.
Blend log, timber frame and conventional or insulated panel construction. A timbered roof over panel walls helps keep costs in line, and leaving posts out of kitchens and baths gives you more freedom with cabinets and counters.
Gently sloping roofs, wide eaves and deep porches on square pillars, with exposed rafters and beams and plenty of built in shelving, seating and nooks. Exteriors balance real wood with low maintenance materials.
Start from a collection of single story and two story designs, some with attached garages. Every plan is only a starting point: bedrooms, layout, building materials and exterior features can all be customized. Ask our team to walk you through the collection.
Materials
Log walls start with Eastern White Pine that is air dried and then kiln dried before milling, and every other piece of wood in the kit is kiln dried as well.
The least resinous of the pines and one of the most proven woods in log building. It stays stable through changes in moisture, mills to a precise fit and has one of the highest insulating values of any wood species. It is used for wall logs, porch posts, railings and trim.
Naturally stable with superior strength for its weight, tight knots and a close grain, which makes it ideal for heavy timber rafters, ceiling beams, girders and timber frame components. Its reddish tone sets off the pine beautifully.
Logs are dried before milling, so the wall is stable from the start.
Drying in a controlled kiln keeps cracking to a minimum.
Most of the pitch crystallizes in the kiln instead of bleeding through later.
Kiln heat eliminates insects, larvae and the fungi that cause decay.
Stains and sealers can go on as soon as the home is built, where they can soak in deeper and last longer.
With the water driven out, even long logs are easier to handle on site.
Logs are graded by trained inspectors and stamped to meet national codes, with independent spot grading by Timber Products Inspection. Honest Abe also follows the log grading standards of the Log & Timber Homes Council, which are accepted by building officials and mortgage lenders.
Log Profiles
The profile is the shape of the log and how the corners come together. Every course is locked with a tongue and groove joint and sealed so the outside stays outside, and larger logs add thermal mass for energy efficiency.
Round outside and flat inside, planed smooth, with an inserted corner notch and a milled drip edge that sheds water.
A D shaped exterior, a smooth v groove interior and Appalachian style dovetail corners. A slimmer version can be hand hewn for a truly authentic look.
A full round log planed smooth, with interlocking corners designed to be stronger and tighter than a traditional saddle notch. A classic Western feel.
A big, rough textured log with a smooth interior and dovetail corners that can be finished with or without chinking. A larger size adds even more thermal mass.
The traditional cabin look, with chinking inside and out over a solid spline, dovetail corners and an optional hand hewn surface.
Grand round timbers for the walls, ceiling beams and roof purlins, inspired by the great lodges of the Northwest and available on any plan.
What’s in the Kit
Once your drawings are complete, your kit is generated from the design. A typical premium log cabin kit covers the following, and timber frame kits swap the log walls for timber posts, plates and braces with insulated wall panels and cedar or log siding.
Treated sill with termite shield and sill seal, floor joists, girders and subfloor decking.
Log walls with every fastener, gasket and caulking, window and door rough opening frames, exterior finish and a borate wood preservative.
Support posts, ceiling beams and tongue and groove decking, plus your choice of a heavy timber, conventional rafter or truss roof with sheathing, cedar fascia and ventilated roof parts.
Treated framing and decking, timber porch posts with angle braces, porch rafters with tongue and groove decking, rails and spindles.
Insulated wood windows, insulated fiberglass doors, interior wall framing, stairs, trim and interior doors.
Clad windows, engineered floor joists, a heavy timber stair package and tongue and groove paneling for interior walls.
The foundation and the porch and deck piers are not part of the kit. Our team builds those, prepares the site, assembles the home and completes the mechanical systems and interior finishes, all under one contract with one licensed builder.
